A Bathroom Cleaning Routine That Works in the Right Order
Clean a bathroom top to bottom, dry work before wet work, toilet last. Two different soils live in there: chalky limescale that only an acid dissolves, and greasy soap scum that only an alkaline cleaner breaks down. Using the wrong one is why scrubbing feels pointless.

1. Ventilate before you spray anything

2. Clear out and do all the dry work
Take bottles out of the shower, clear the counter, pull the mat and bin out. Then dust the vent cover and light fixture and sweep or vacuum hair and dust off the floor. Hair and dust turn into gray sludge the second they meet water, so removing them dry saves the whole floor step later.
3. Spray, then walk away

5. Work top to bottom
Mirror and glass first, then wall tiles, then fixtures and shower head, then the basin and tub, then the floor. Gravity is the reason: anything you clean above a finished surface will drip onto it. This single ordering rule removes most of the redoing people complain about.
6. Toilet last, with separate tools
Squirt cleaner under the rim and let it sit while you wipe the tank, the lid, the seat hinges and the base with a cloth you will not use anywhere else. Then brush the bowl and flush. Doing the toilet last means nothing from it is carried to the sink or tub on your cloth.
7. Rinse, squeegee and dry
Rinse every surface you treated — leftover product film attracts dirt and can etch some finishes over time. Squeegee the glass and tiles, wipe the metal fixtures dry, and leave the fan running for about 20 minutes. Bathrooms stay clean based on how fast they dry, not how hard they were scrubbed.

- Never mix chlorine bleach with any acidic cleaner — vinegar, citric acid, or most limescale and toilet bowl removers. The combination releases toxic chlorine gas. Rinse a surface fully and ventilate before switching between the two.
- Do not mix bleach with ammonia-based glass cleaners either. That produces chloramine vapor, which is also toxic.
- Keep acidic cleaners off natural stone. Marble, travertine and limestone etch permanently — use a pH-neutral cleaner labeled for stone.
