Indoor Humidity Through the Year: Summer and Winter Need Opposite Moves

The target is 40 to 60 percent relative humidity most of the year, trending toward the lower end in winter. The tactic reverses with the season: when outdoor air is more humid than indoor air, opening windows adds moisture, and when it is drier, opening windows removes it.

Quick fix

  1. Buy a hygrometer and put one in the dampest room. Everything below depends on knowing the actual number.
  2. Above 60 percent: close the windows, run the air conditioner or a dehumidifier. Ventilating on a muggy day brings moisture in, not out.
  3. Winter, with condensation on the glass: open windows wide for 5 to 10 minutes twice a day. Cold outdoor air is dry, so it takes humidity with it.
  4. Sustained readings above 70 percent grow mold on surfaces even with no visible water. Treat that as the line where you act rather than watch.
  5. Closets, cabinets and north-facing rooms need air movement more than they need another product. Leave gaps, open doors, run a small fan.

  1. 1. Measure in more than one room

    Whole-home humidity is a fiction. A closed bedroom, a north-facing corner room and a sunny living room can differ by 15 points at the same moment. Put a meter in the room that smells musty and one somewhere normal, and let both settle for a few hours before reading them.

  2. 2. In humid weather, close up and dehumidify

    When outdoor air is warm and wet, every hour with the windows open is an hour of moisture flowing in. Air conditioning removes water as a side effect of cooling, and a dehumidifier does it directly. Empty the tank or run a drain hose, because a full tank silently ends the job.

  3. 3. In cold weather, ventilate briefly instead

    Cold air holds very little water. Once it warms up indoors its relative humidity drops sharply, which is why a five-minute cross-draught in January dries a room in a way that no amount of window-opening in July can. Twice a day is enough for most homes.

    Lids on pots, range hood on while cooking, bathroom fan running through the shower and 20 minutes after, dryer vented outdoors, laundry not draped over radiators. None of these is dramatic on its own, and together they move the baseline by several points before you buy anything.

  5. 5. Give closets and cabinets air, then a desiccant

    A packed closet on an exterior wall has almost no air exchange, so it sits several points wetter than the room. Leave a hand-width gap at the back and between stacks, open the doors when you air the room, and add a desiccant tub only after that. A tub in a sealed, stuffed closet is treating a symptom.

  6. 6. Keep colder rooms warmer, not sealed

    A north-facing bedroom that gets no heat all week has cold walls, and cold surfaces collect moisture from any warm air that reaches them. A low, steady temperature costs less than repeated reheating and keeps surfaces above the dew point. Close the door and turn the heat off entirely and you get the damp corner back.

  7. 7. Know when it has stopped being a housekeeping problem

    If readings stay above 70 percent through changes of weather, or there is a persistent musty smell with nothing visible, suspect a source in the structure — a slow plumbing leak, a wet crawlspace, poor drainage against the foundation. At that point the answer is a professional inspection rather than another appliance.

Safety notes

  • Do not mix chlorine bleach with vinegar, citric acid or acidic bathroom cleaners when treating the mold that damp causes. The reaction produces toxic chlorine gas.
  • Calcium chloride absorbers collect a corrosive brine. Keep them off wood floors and out of reach of children and pets, and do not tip the liquid onto fabric or metal.
  • Humidifiers need regular cleaning with fresh water each use. A neglected tank aerosolizes bacteria into the room, which is a worse problem than dry air.
  • Over-humidifying in winter is a real risk. Push past roughly 50 percent when it is freezing outside and you will find the extra water again as condensation on windows and cold walls.
  • Unvented kerosene and propane heaters add both water vapor and combustion gases to a closed room. Follow the manufacturer instructions and keep a working carbon monoxide alarm.
  • Do not open up an HVAC unit, dehumidifier or ventilation fan to clean inside it. Clean the filters as the manual describes and have the rest serviced.

Never mix different types of cleaning products. Chlorine bleach combined with acidic cleaners releases toxic gas. Always follow the instructions on the product label.

By situation

A run of muggy, rainy days

Instinct says open the windows to freshen the place up, and that is exactly backwards when outdoor air is at 85 percent. Keep it closed, run the dehumidifier or the AC, and use a fan indoors for the feeling of moving air. If you need to air the house, do it in the early afternoon when outdoor humidity is lowest.

Basements and ground-floor rooms

Basements sit against soil that stays cool and damp year-round, so they run high even when the rest of the house is fine. A dedicated dehumidifier with a drain hose is usually the practical answer. Also check that gutters and grading move water away from the foundation, since that is often where the moisture is entering.

Closets where clothes come out smelling stale

Stale smell without visible mold is early growth on fabric surfaces. Take everything out, air it, wash what can be washed, and vacuum the closet. Then store less densely — the gaps you leave do more than the absorber you add.

One room is always colder and damper than the rest

Check whether it is a corner room, above an unheated garage, or on the north side. Those lose heat on more than one plane. Keep the door open so it shares warm air with the rest of the home, run a fan aimed at the coldest wall, and pull furniture off that wall by a couple of inches.

  • Relative humidity is a ratio, not an amount. The same water in the air reads as low humidity when the room is warm and high humidity when it cools down, which is why a room can feel fine at midday and grow mold overnight.
  • Household activity generates several quarts of water vapor a day — cooking, showering, laundry, plants, and simply breathing.
  • Outdoor conditions decide whether ventilation helps or hurts. In summer the outside air is often wetter than the inside air; in winter it is almost always drier.
  • Airtight, well-insulated homes hold heat and moisture equally well, so moisture that used to leak away through draughts now stays and finds the coldest surface.

Keeping it from coming back

  • Leave a hygrometer somewhere you already look every day. Noticing a drift from 55 to 68 percent early is the whole game.
  • Match the tactic to the season: seal and dehumidify in muggy weather, ventilate briefly in cold weather.
  • Run exhaust fans every time you shower or cook, and let them run past the end of the activity.
  • Store clothes and bedding with gaps, off the floor, and away from exterior walls.
  • Keep unused rooms at a low steady temperature with the doors open rather than cold and shut.
  • Clean or replace HVAC and dehumidifier filters on the schedule in the manual. A clogged filter quietly halves the capacity you are relying on.

FAQ

What number should I actually aim for?

Forty to sixty percent covers most of the year and most homes, and the US EPA guidance for discouraging mold is to keep indoor humidity below 60 percent. In deep winter, aim lower — 30 to 40 percent — because anything higher shows up as condensation on cold glass.

Should I run a dehumidifier and a humidifier in the same house?

Occasionally that makes sense, in different rooms with different conditions, such as a damp basement and a dry bedroom over a heating vent. In the same room it is just two appliances fighting each other. Measure each room before deciding.

Do the little desiccant tubs actually do anything?

In a genuinely small sealed space — a closet, a cabinet, a storage bin — yes, and you can see the water they pull. In an open room they are token. Their capacity is measured in ounces of water while a room generates quarts, so size the tool to the space.

The humidity reads fine but the house smells musty. What now?

Musty smell is microbial growth, and growth follows local conditions rather than the room average. Look behind furniture on exterior walls, under sinks, in the closet on the north side, and around the washing machine. If you find nothing, the source may be under the floor or inside a wall and worth an inspection.
