Washing Sweaters and Wool Knits Without Shrinking or Stretching Them
Two separate failures ruin knits, and they have opposite causes. Shrinking comes from rubbing the fabric plus a sudden jump in water temperature; stretching comes from the weight of water while a wet knit hangs. Press instead of rub, rinse at the same temperature you washed in, and dry flat.
Quick fix
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water, around 85°F / 30°C, and dissolve a wool detergent or a mild liquid detergent before the sweater goes in.
- Submerge it and press down with flat palms 20 or 30 times. Do not rub, twist, or scrub — friction is what felts wool.
- Rinse in water at the same temperature. A cold rinse after a warm wash is a temperature shock, and shock plus movement is what shrinks knits.
- Never wring. Gather the sweater into a ball, press the water out, then roll it in a dry towel and press again.
- Lay it flat on a fresh towel or a mesh rack, pat it back to its original shape, and leave it there until fully dry. Do not hang it.

Step by step
1. Check the label and note the shape first
Look for a hand-wash or wool symbol; a crossed-out tub means dry clean. Before it goes in the water, lay the sweater flat and photograph it, or measure the chest width and body length. Knits relax and move when wet, and having the original dimensions makes reshaping accurate instead of a guess.
2. Dissolve the detergent before the sweater goes in
Concentrated detergent sitting directly on wool can leave a pale patch and stiffen the fibers. Fill the basin with lukewarm water at about 85°F / 30°C, add the detergent, and swirl it until the water is uniform. Then add the garment, turned inside out.
3. Press-wash instead of rubbing
Push the sweater under the water with flat hands and release, twenty to thirty times, so water flows through the knit. Wool fibers are covered in microscopic scales; rubbing makes those scales interlock permanently, and that is felting, which cannot be reversed. Ten minutes of soaking does more than any amount of scrubbing.
4. Spot-treat cuffs and underarms gently
For collar and cuff grime, dab with a cloth dipped in the wash water rather than scrubbing the spot. Concentrate on lifting the soil out rather than working it around. If a mark needs real force to move, that is a job for a cleaner, not for more rubbing.
5. Rinse at the same temperature, twice
Drain and refill with water at the same temperature you washed in, then press the sweater through it again. Repeat until the water runs clear, usually twice. Matching the temperature matters as much as keeping it low: the sudden change between hot and cold is half of what causes shrinkage.
6. Remove water by pressing, never by twisting
Lift the sweater with both hands supporting the whole weight so it does not stretch in your grip. Press it against the side of the basin, then lay it on a dry towel, roll the towel up with the sweater inside, and press along the roll. A second dry towel gets it to barely damp, which cuts drying time substantially.
7. Dry flat and reshape while damp
Lay the sweater flat on a dry towel or mesh rack, away from direct sun and radiators. While it is still damp, pat it back to the measurements you noted: square the shoulders, straighten the sleeves, and ease the body back to width. Fibers set as they dry, so this is the moment where shape is decided. Flip it once partway through.
Safety notes
- Do not hang a wet knit on a hanger or a line. Water is heavy, and the shoulders and body stretch permanently within hours.
- Do not put wool in a tumble dryer unless the label explicitly allows it. Heat and tumbling together are the fastest way to felt a sweater.
- Never use chlorine bleach on wool — it dissolves protein fibers. And never mix chlorine bleach with acidic cleaners such as vinegar or citric acid, which releases toxic chlorine gas.
- Avoid strong alkaline detergents and heavy-duty powders on wool and cashmere. Use a wool or delicates formula.
- Do not soak wool for hours. Ten to fifteen minutes is plenty; long soaks dull the fibers and can loosen dye.
- Keep the garment out of direct sunlight while drying. Sun fades dyes and can make wool brittle and scratchy.
Never mix different types of cleaning products. Chlorine bleach combined with acidic cleaners releases toxic gas. Always follow the instructions on the product label.
By situation
Cashmere and very fine knits
Treat these as more delicate versions of the same process: cooler water, less agitation, shorter contact time. Support the full weight whenever you move them, because fine gauge knits deform under their own wet weight faster than a chunky sweater does.
Using the machine wool cycle
A genuine wool or hand-wash cycle rocks the drum gently rather than tumbling, and many machines handle it well. Put the sweater in a mesh bag, use a wool detergent, and set the lowest spin your machine offers. A short low spin removes water without the stress of wringing.
The sweater already shrank
Sometimes partly recoverable, sometimes not. Soak it in lukewarm water with a little hair conditioner for 10 minutes, then press out the water and gently stretch it back toward its measurements while drying flat, pinning if needed. If the surface has gone dense and fuzzy, the fibers have felted and it will not return.
Acrylic and cotton knits
Acrylic does not felt but stretches easily and pills quickly, so the flat-drying rule still applies. Cotton knits sag more than wool when wet and can shrink in hot water; wash cool and dry flat for them too. The main difference is that these fibers tolerate machine washing more readily.
Why it happens
- Wool fibers are covered in overlapping scales. Heat, moisture, and mechanical movement make those scales lock into each other, and the fabric contracts into a denser, smaller piece. That is felting, and it is irreversible.
- A sudden temperature change makes the fibers move and the scales open and close abruptly, so hot-then-cold does far more damage than a steady warm temperature.
- Stretching is a separate mechanical problem: a wet knit can hold several times its dry weight in water, and hanging that weight from the shoulders elongates the loops.
- Detergent that is too alkaline attacks the protein structure itself, leaving the fabric harsh and less elastic even when the size is unchanged.
Keeping it from coming back
- Wash knits only when they need it. Airing a sweater overnight handles most wear; two or three washes a season is normal.
- Fold sweaters for storage instead of hanging them. Hangers create shoulder bumps and stretch the yoke over time.
- Turn knits inside out before any wash to reduce surface friction and pilling.
- Keep a wool detergent on hand so you are not tempted to use whatever is in the machine.
- Deal with small marks by spot-cleaning rather than washing the whole garment.
- Store clean and dry in a breathable container with cedar or lavender; moths are drawn to body oils left in worn knits.
