Stainless Steel Marks: Rainbow Sheen, White Film, or Tiny Pits
Identify the mark before you touch it. A blue-and-gold rainbow sheen is heat tint, a chalky white film is mineral deposit, and small dark speckles are pitting. The first two dissolve in a mild acid. The third is corrosion and cannot be undone.
Quick fix
- Rainbow sheen: wipe the cooled pan with white vinegar on a cloth, leave 5 minutes, rinse and dry. It fades or disappears.
- Chalky white film or spots: fill with a mix of one part white vinegar to three parts water, or dissolve a teaspoon of citric acid, simmer briefly, then let it sit 20 minutes before rinsing.
- Tiny dark pits: nothing dissolves them. A mildly abrasive stainless cleanser applied with the grain makes them less visible, and that is the limit.
- Never use chlorine bleach or a chlorine-based cleaner on stainless. Chloride is what causes pitting in the first place.
- Dry the pan by hand after every wash. Water left to evaporate is where most of these marks begin.

Step by step
1. Work out which of the three marks you have
Hold the pan under good light. Iridescent blue, purple and gold that shifts as you tilt it is heat tint. Dull white that sits on top of the metal is mineral scale. Small dark points that stay when you scrub are pits. Treating the wrong one wastes effort and can make things worse.
2. Wash and cool the pan first
Acid works on the metal surface, not through a layer of grease. Wash with dish soap, rinse, and let the pan come down to room temperature. Applying vinegar to a hot pan makes it evaporate immediately and fills the kitchen with fumes.
3. Heat tint: a short acid wipe
Soak a cloth in white vinegar, lay it over the tinted area, and leave it five to ten minutes. The tint is an oxide layer only nanometres thick, so mild acid removes it quickly. If it is still there, repeat rather than extending to an hour.
4. White film: acid with more contact time
Mineral scale is thicker and needs longer. Cover the affected area with diluted vinegar or citric acid solution, bring it to a gentle simmer for a minute, turn off the heat and let it stand 20 to 30 minutes. Scale that has built up over months may need two rounds.
5. Pitting: gentle abrasion only, with the grain
Make a paste with a stainless cleanser or baking soda and rub lightly along the direction of the brushed finish, never in circles. This smooths the surface around each pit so they catch less light. The pits themselves are holes in the metal and they stay.
6. Rinse completely and dry by hand
Any acid left in a rivet seam keeps working on the metal, and any cleanser left behind dries to a white crust. Rinse under running water, then dry with a towel straight away. Hand drying is the single habit that prevents most repeat marks.
7. Give the surface time to re-passivate
Stainless resists rust because chromium in the alloy forms an invisible oxide layer when exposed to air. After an acid clean, leave the pan dry and uncovered for a few hours before storing it, so that layer rebuilds undisturbed.
Safety notes
- Never mix chlorine bleach with vinegar, citric acid, or any acidic descaler. The combination releases toxic chlorine gas.
- Keep chlorine bleach away from stainless entirely. Chloride ions break down the protective chromium oxide layer and are a direct cause of the pitting people are trying to clean off.
- Do not use steel wool on stainless. It leaves embedded iron particles that rust and leave orange specks that look like the pan itself is corroding.
- Do not add salt to water before it boils. Undissolved salt sinks and sits against the base, which is where a ring of pits usually appears.
- Avoid leaving salty, acidic, or tomato-based food in a stainless pan overnight. Long contact does more damage than cooking ever does.
- On clad or coated cookware, check the maker instructions before using an abrasive cleanser. Some finishes and exterior coatings scratch easily.
- Work in a ventilated kitchen when simmering vinegar. The vapour is irritating to eyes and airways.
Never mix different types of cleaning products. Chlorine bleach combined with acidic cleaners releases toxic gas. Always follow the instructions on the product label.
By situation
The rainbow comes back every time you cook
That is normal for stainless used on high heat and it is not a cleaning failure. Heat tint is purely cosmetic and harmless to cook on. If it bothers you, lower the preheat temperature, and treat it once a month rather than after every meal.
A white ring at the waterline of a stockpot
This is hard water scale marking where the water sat. Fill the pot above the ring with diluted vinegar solution rather than trying to scrub the line itself, and give it half an hour. Scrubbing a mineral ring rarely works because the deposit is bonded, not sitting loose.
Orange or brown specks that look like rust
Stainless can show surface rust when iron particles from a scouring pad, a cast iron pan stored on top, or the water supply settle on it. Try a stainless cleanser paste first. If the specks lift off and the metal underneath is smooth, it was contamination rather than the pan corroding.
The dishwasher left everything cloudy
That haze is usually a mix of mineral deposit and detergent film, and vinegar clears it. Cloudiness that survives an acid treatment is etching from harsh detergent plus soft water, and etching is permanent. Wash good pans by hand.
Why it happens
- Heat tint is thin-film interference. When stainless is heated, the chromium oxide layer thickens slightly, and light reflecting off the top and bottom of that layer interferes to produce colour. Nothing has been deposited on the pan.
- White film comes from the water, not the food. Calcium and magnesium dissolved in tap water are left behind when water evaporates or boils away, and starchy cooking water leaves its own dull residue.
- Pitting is chloride corrosion. Salt, bleach, and salty food break through the passive oxide layer at single points, and once corrosion starts in a pit it continues underneath the surface.
- All three are more likely when the pan is left wet. Standing water concentrates minerals and salts against one spot for hours.
Keeping it from coming back
- Dry pans by hand immediately after washing instead of leaving them on the rack.
- Add salt only after the water reaches a boil, and stir so it dissolves rather than settling.
- Do not store leftovers in stainless cookware, especially anything salted or acidic.
- Preheat on medium rather than high. Most heat tint comes from empty pans left on full heat.
- Keep chlorine cleaners out of the sink where pans soak, and rinse anything that has touched them.
- Wipe up hard water spots as they appear. Fresh mineral spots wipe away, while old ones need acid.
