Cleaning a Range Hood: The Filter Is Most of the Job
Roughly ninety percent of the grease is in the metal mesh filter, and it comes out by soaking rather than scrubbing. Hot water with baking soda and dish soap for 20 minutes, then rinse. A saturated filter both kills airflow and is a genuine fire hazard.

Step by step
1. Turn the hood off, then remove the filter
Switch the fan and light off before reaching up. Metal mesh filters usually slide out on a track or release with a spring catch or wire loop, and they come out at an angle. Do not force one that will not move — some models have a retaining screw. Support it as it releases; a saturated filter is heavier than it looks and it drips.
2. Soak in hot water with baking soda and dish soap
Lay the filter flat in the sink or a roasting pan and cover it with the hottest water available, then add roughly half a cup of baking soda and a generous squirt of dish soap. Baking soda is alkaline, which is what breaks cooking grease down, and hot water keeps the grease liquid so it can drain out of the mesh. Twenty to thirty minutes suits a filter cleaned regularly; give a neglected one an hour and change the water once.
3. Rinse and brush lightly, along the grain of the mesh
Rinse under hot running water first — much of the grease leaves with the rinse. Brush what remains with nylon bristles moving in the direction of the mesh layers, not across them. Aluminum mesh crushes easily and a flattened section blocks airflow permanently. Never use a wire brush or steel wool.
4. Dry the filter fully before reinstalling
Shake the water out, blot with a towel, and let it air-dry for an hour. Fitting a damp filter means dust and airborne grease stick to it immediately, and standing water in the frame corrodes aluminum. Slide it back in the same orientation it came out.
5. Wipe the hood underside and the blower opening
With the filter out you can reach the metal underside of the hood and the rim around the blower opening. Wipe with a cloth wrung out in hot soapy water, then a plain-water pass. Do not spray liquid up into the blower or the wiring, and do not remove the blower assembly — check the manufacturer instructions for what is designed to come out.
6. Wipe the exterior, then the light cover
Stainless hoods streak if you wipe randomly. Use a barely damp cloth and finish with a dry one moving in a single direction along the brushed grain. Let the bulb cool completely before wiping the light cover — a greasy cover cuts visible light noticeably.
7. Check whether your model also has a charcoal filter
Ductless hoods that recirculate air into the kitchen carry a charcoal filter behind the mesh, and charcoal filters cannot be washed. Water destroys the odor-absorbing capacity, so a soaked one looks fine and does nothing. These get replaced, typically every three to six months depending on how much you fry.
Safety notes
- Grease-saturated filters and ducts are a recognized kitchen fire risk. A flare-up on the burner below can ignite accumulated grease in the hood. Regular cleaning is a safety task, not just a cosmetic one.
- Never mix chlorine bleach with vinegar, citric acid, or any acidic cleaner — the combination releases toxic chlorine gas. Bleach is not a degreaser and should not be used on the hood.
- Do not use oven cleaner or lye-based degreaser on aluminum mesh filters. Caustic cleaners corrode and darken aluminum and can weaken the mesh.
- Do not spray liquid into the fan motor, wiring, or switch panel, and do not disassemble the blower. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and use a technician for internal service.
- Turn the hood off before removing the filter, and let halogen or incandescent bulbs cool fully before touching the light cover.
- Wear gloves. Filter frame edges are thin sheet metal and can cut.
- Do not pour a lot of hot grease-laden water down a drain that already runs slowly. Flush it with plenty of hot water and dish soap.
Never mix different types of cleaning products. Chlorine bleach combined with acidic cleaners releases toxic gas. Always follow the instructions on the product label.

Metal mesh versus charcoal — telling them apart
Metal mesh is an aluminum or stainless grid in a frame and it washes indefinitely. Charcoal filters are dark and dense, often a disc or flat pad, sitting behind the mesh. If your hood vents outside through a duct you have mesh only; if it blows air back into the room you have both.
A filter that has never been cleaned
Expect to change the water two or three times and to spend an hour rather than twenty minutes. Boiling water poured over the filter in a roasting pan beats tap-hot water on hardened deposits. If the mesh stays clogged after two long soaks, replacement filters are inexpensive.
The fan sounds normal but pulls poorly
Clean the filter first — that fixes most cases. If suction is still weak, check that the exterior vent damper is not stuck shut with grease or blocked by a bird nest, and that the duct run has not come loose. A ductless hood with an exhausted charcoal filter also feels weak and smells stale.
Dishwasher instead of hand soaking
Many metal mesh filters survive a dishwasher cycle, but check the manual. Dishwasher detergent is strongly alkaline and repeated cycles can dull or discolor aluminum. Run the filter alone, not with dishes — the grease redeposits on everything else in the load.

- Grease landing on the mesh cools, thickens, and picks up dust, so the deposit gets denser and stickier over time rather than staying liquid.
- A clogged filter reduces airflow, so less grease is captured at the source and more settles on cabinets, walls and ceiling. The problem compounds.
- Heat from the burners below keeps partially baking the accumulated grease, which is why an old filter carries a hard varnish-like layer rather than a soft coating.
Keeping it from coming back
- Soak the mesh filter monthly if you cook most nights, every two to three months for lighter cooking. A maintained filter takes ten minutes.
- Turn the hood on before you start cooking and leave it running 10 to 15 minutes after, so airborne grease is captured instead of settling.
- Use a lid or splatter screen when frying. Less grease in the air means less in the filter and on the cabinets.
- Wipe the hood exterior weekly while the film is still soft. Once it hardens it needs a soak-and-wipe of its own.
- Put charcoal filter replacement on a calendar — they degrade invisibly, with no visual cue when they stop working.
- Run the hood on a higher setting for high-heat cooking rather than leaving it on low for everything.
